The importance of handwashing technique

Accreditation Connection, January 9, 2006

Renee Patterson, CSP, IC consultant in Lansing, MI, says whether you use an antimicrobial soap or not, quickly running your hands under a stream of water isn't going to do much.

"Traditionally, hospitals have used antimicrobial soaps because they tend to have a better effect," Patterson says. "But only if you use them per their instructions and [wash] for at least 30 seconds."

Most healthcare staff don't wash their hands for a full 30 seconds, says Patterson, which diminishes the effect of any type of hand sanitizer.

"No matter what you're using, the most important thing is friction," says Patterson. "That's what removes the germs from your hands and washes them down the drain."
