Questions to think about as your hospital prepares for an influenza outbreak

Accreditation Connection, December 12, 2005

Deborah Levy, PhD, of the Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, offers these questions to think about as your hospital prepares for an influenza outbreak:

  • Does the hospital have plans for flu surge capacity?
  • Is the hospital's laboratory capable of handling a sudden upswing in tests?
  • Will there be enough beds to handle an influx of patients?
  • Is your facility capable of ordering more supplies quickly?
  • If the morgue reaches capacity, how will staff handle deceased patients?
  • How will the hospital supplement staff if workers are out sick with the flu?
  • At what point can workers who had the flu return to their jobs?
