Seven tips for effective laboratory compliance training

Accreditation Connection, December 5, 2005

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) makes it clear in its 1998 Compliance Program Guidance for Clinical Laboratories that all employees need education on federal and state compliance laws, billing issues, marketing practices, and corporate ethics. This includes initial training for new hires and periodic refreshers for other workers, says the OIG.

If your training sessions miss the mark, you won't have an effective compliance program and will lose any legal benefit you might have gotten out of the program, says healthcare attorney Sandra Greenblatt. With her warning in mind, check out these seven tips to ensure that your education efforts truly are effective:

Tip #1: Consider a variety of training options.

Tip #2: Use both internal and external training leaders.

Tip #3: Repetition helps comprehension.

Tip #4: Involve management in your efforts.

Tip #5: Learning should be fun and interactive.

Tip #6: Adapt to the age of attendees.

Tip #7: Keep records of what and whom you teach.
