Should we still consider medications when assessing a patient's fall risk?
Accreditation Connection, November 28, 2005
Yes, according to Della Lin, MD, and Glenn Krasker, MHSA, who answered this question during a recent HCPro audioconference, "JCAHO's Patient Safety Goals for 2006: Tips and recommendations for compliance."
The medications a patient takes remain an important factor in determining a patient's fall risk, even if it's no longer specifically mentioned in the goal, Lin and Krasker say.
The change reflects an overall attitude change from the JCAHO, which is moving away from prescriptive solutions to more broad-based, hospital-initiated solutions. Instead of telling facilities what exactly to change, regardless of individual circumstance, the commission has outlined the broad scope of the goal and expects hospitals to provide their own detailed, uniform policies and solutions.
