Sample policy: Credentialing physicians in the event of disaster

Purpose

Practitioners who are not members of the consolidated medical staff at [facility name] and who do not possess medical staff privileges may practice at any district facility during an emergency (defined as any officially declared emergency, whether it is local, state, or national).

Policy

Any practitioner providing patient care must be granted privileges prior to providing patient care, even during a disaster situation.

Procedure

The following information must be available and if possible, verified to be granted emergency privileges:

1. Valid professional license to practice insert [state]

2. Photo identification

3. Certificate of malpractice insurance

4. List of current hospital affiliations where the practitioner holds active staff privileges

5. National Practitioner Data Bank and Office of Inspector General query

Verification of the above information should be done as soon as possible by the medical staff office. A record of this information should be retained. It is recommended that the practitioner be paired with a currently credentialed medical staff member, and he or she should act only under the direct supervision of a medical staff member.

Privileges would be granted by the appropriate incident commander (CEO/designee) handling the disaster, upon recommendation by the appointed medical staff director.

When the emergency situation no longer exists, these temporary emergency privileges terminate.
