Sample checklist for complying with RI.2.10, respecting the rights of patients.
Accreditation Connection, October 31, 2005
RI.2.10 requires that hospitals demonstrate, through the process of providing patient care, that they respect patients' rights. All caregivers must understand what patients' rights are, and they must honor them during interactions with the patients and their families during their care and treatment.
The following are things your organization should be doing to meet its patients' rights:
- Is there a patients' rights policy?
- Does the policy comply with applicable state laws?
- Does the policy fit into the mission and capabilities of your organization?
- Are new employees given information about the policy?
- Are physicians who request and are granted privileges given information about the policy?
- Are elements of policy integrated into patient admission and assessment documents and processes?
- Do patients receive and acknowledge receipt of their rights?
- Does the policy include a description of the complaint and grievance process? Or is there another policy to address this?
- Are patients made aware of the process to voice covers about the care they receive?
