What's required of an organization for patient falls assessment and prevention?
Accreditation Connection, October 24, 2005
According to Carol Payson and Corinne Haviley, authors of the HCPro book, Patient Falls Assessment and Prevention: Strategies and tools to comply with JCAHO, designing a fall screening and prevention program with staff input is the first step.
Then, consider that you must gain staff compliance and buy-in, create staff awareness, train staff, and maintain staff skills and practice. Simply adapting standard interventions (e.g., hanging a fall prevention sign on a patient's room door) may not be enough to ensure a successful program.
Studying your organization's falls history provides insight into your facility's environment, the assistance your aptients require, and the diligence it takes to sustain prevention techniques over time.
