JCAHO offers field review on proposed changes to leadership chapter
Accreditation Connection, September 26, 2005
After completing a comprehensive review of the leadership standards for all healthcare settings, the JCAHO significantly rewrote this chapter. It reported that the major proposed revisions include the following:
· New standards from the Leadership Accountabilities Task Force have been worked into the revised standards. The task force addressed issues relating to the responsibilities and accountabilities of leadership collectively and leadership components such as governance, management, and clinical professional staff.
· A culture of safety standard has been incorporated into the chapter, and current safety standards relating to leadership responsibility have improved.
· Increased emphasis has been placed on existing standards that help organizations use a "systems approach" to prevent adverse events.
· A small number of standards that previously resided in other chapters (i.e., in nursing; medical staff; and ethics, rights, and responsibilities) have been moved into the leadership chapter.
Deadline for comments is October 14. Those interested are invited to complete an online field review during this comment period.
