Design a safety retreat agenda
Accreditation Connection, August 8, 2005
John Murray Jr., CHMM, CSP, CIH, at Baystate Health System in Springfield, MA, says a typical agenda for a one-day safety retreat at his facility consists of three sessions in the morning:
1. The first speaker generally talks about some of the larger issues concerning hospitals, such as safety, infection control, or patient protection
2. Another provides a regulatory update with information pertaining to various occupational safety, environmental, or accreditation standards that affect hospitals
3. A third presentation consists of a business meeting for systemwide functions relating to safety programs, such as worker compensation, ergonomics, or employee health
The third session is "sort of a state-of-the-state presentation" for the health system, says Murray, the retreat's organizer. Facilities can tailor topics to their own particular needs.
The attendees break for a prepared lunch and then listen to a keynote speaker, who is often in a top position in a safety-related field. Closing comments follow and then attendees have time to network before everyone adjourns.
