Medication mix-up sparks investigation

This week's report of a medication mix-up at a CVS pharmacy in Massachusetts led to several new reports of medication errors causing state officials to investigate the pharmacy, according to the Boston Herald.

A four-year-old girl was hospitalized Friday, July 8 after she took an adult's heart medicine instead of medication for hyperactivity. About 90 minutes after the girl ingested the drug, she complained of being tired. Around that time, the pharmacist called the mother and said she was given the wrong medication.

The girl is home and fine now, but this report caused other alleged CVS medication mix-up victims to come forward with their stories. The state will investigate 40 claims of prescription errors.

In a written statement, the Rhode Island-based CVS chain admitted it bagged the wrong medication.

"Based on our investigation, the prescription was filled correctly, however a prescription meant for another patient was inadvertently provided at the point-of-sale," the statement said.
