JCAHO president encourages systems approach to healthcare

JCAHO President Dennis S. O'Leary, MD, testified to congressional leaders on June 9 that healthcare organizations must embrace a "systems approach" to prevent adverse events, according to EndoNurse.
O'Leary encouraged an environment of safety and said errors are opportunities for learning and improvement. The systems approach was borrowed from engineering and quality control principles that have been applied in manufacturing. A way to prevent the occurrence of adverse events, this approach designs systems that anticipate human error.
