Scorecard helps patients choose hospitals

Accreditation Connection, April 18, 2005

Patients can now visit a Web site developed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in association with other healthcare organizations, that compares the nation's hospitals based on how they follow specific practices.

The Web site, www.hospitalcare.hhs.gov, measures treatments for three common problems-heart attacks, heart failure, and pneumonia. It compares results with state and national averages.

This scorecard focuses on steps organizations take to treat specific diseases, as opposed to other scorecards that look at outcomes. Some healthcare professionals say Hospital Compare may lead hospitals to use pay-for-performance.

CMS doesn't require hospitals to participate in the program, but those that chose not to give their information to the government will see their annual Medicare payment increases reduced 0.4% for fiscal 2005, 2006, and 2007-which can mean a loss of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars, according to The Tennessean.
