JCAHO releases new standards FAQs
Accreditation Connection, April 11, 2005
The JCAHO on April 1 posted answers to frequently asked questions about several new, revised, and updated standards in the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals (CAMH).
Provision of Care and Management of Environment of Care chapters garnered the most FAQs. The list also contains information on Ethics, Rights, and Responsibilities; Leadership; Management of Human Resources; Management of Information; and Medical Staff.
For example, one of the questions in the Waived Testing section of the Provision of Care list asks if healthcare providers can make care decisions based on results from patient/resident/client self-glucose testing on his or her personal glucose machine. The JCAHO says yes, as long as you inform the staff and the organization's leaders of the process and risk. You must also put this allowance in your facility's policies.
