Prevention of surgical fires and patient harm due to emotional and behavioral crises are among the eight new goals the JCAHO may add to its list of 2006 hospital requirements.
The JCAHO posted the proposed goals for hospitals on its Web site on January 27, as well as those for ambulatory, assisted living, behavioral healthcare, critical access hospitals, home care, laboratory, long-term care, office-based surgery, and disease-specific care programs. Accredited organization leaders had until February 27-less than one month-to submit an electronic evaluation of the JCAHO's proposed 2006 National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG) and requirements.
The JCAHO plans to review the evaluations before finalizing the list of 2006 goals for release this summer. The accreditor will most likely require implementation by January 1, 2006 .
The field review for hospitals included 13 proposed requirements or language updates to existing goals, eight proposed new goals with 23 proposed requirements, and the retirement of several goals into the standards. JCAHO says it will base the latter on the results of the field review submissions.
