How to address JCAHO standard RI.2.60

Accreditation Connection, September 24, 2004

The intent of standard RI.2.60 is to ensure that patients receive adequate information about the people who are responsible for their care, treatment, and services, says Glenn D. Krasker, MHSA, president of Critical Management Solutions, a consulting firm that specializes in medical error risk reduction in Wilmington, DE. Krasker offers these two tips to help you comply:

* Individuals who interact with patients should identify themselves by name and professional status (e.g., "Hello, Mrs. Jones, my name is Fred Smith. I am a physical therapist, and I am here to provide your therapy").

* Have a system in place to inform patients of the names of the physicians who coordinate their care, consult on their case, perform procedures, etc. It's good practice to inform patients about their caregivers when they sign consent forms during the admission process and prior to a procedure.
