Understanding the JCAHO's clarification to the new scoring guidelines
Accreditation Connection, June 18, 2004
The JCAHO's February update to the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals contains additional information about the scoring guidelines for Category A, B, and C elements of performance (EP) that have multiple requirements. They are effective immediately. What do all these changes mean to you? We asked Steve Bryant, practice director of accreditation services at the Marblehead, MA-based consulting firm, The Greeley Company, a division of HCPro, to clear up the confusion.
These are very specific JCAHO changes for the scoring of EPs with multiple components, which repres`ent roughly 10% of all EPs. Be aware of them so surveyors don't inadvertently overscore you during a survey. But I don't recommend that when you do your own evaluation you get too hung up on the loopholes or the greater flexibility in scoring. When the JCAHO specifies the minimum requirements in an EP, make sure your hospital provides those minimum requirements because they make good clinical sense. You can worry about the technicalities of the scoring when you perform your periodic performance review and during your triennial survey.
