A Leapfrog Group report found that hospitals need to improve high-risk surgery patient outcomes. The report examined data from 1,500 hospitals in 2013 to determine predicted survival rates for four procedures: abdominal aortic aneurysm repairs, aortic valve replacements (AVR), esophagectomy, and pancreatectomy.

The report found the biggest variance in outcomes in pancreatectomy, with the survival rate varying from 100% in high-performing hospitals to 81% in low-performing hospitals. The lowest survival rate variance was for AVR procedures, with a range of 92% and 97%.
