The Physician-Patient Alliance for Health & Safety (PPAHS) presented eight ways to improve patient safety and outcomes earlier this month at the annual conference of the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses.

The areas PPAHS highlighted included verifying that continuous electronic monitoring is in place for handoffs from nurse-to-nurse; double checking patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) dosing, pump parameters, and continuous monitor settings; and including daily lead changes and handoff communication on lead changes to decrease nuisance alarms. The eight key points were in a poster presentation based on a national survey of PCA practices.
