Latest Sentinel Event Alert focuses on radiation risks
Accreditation Connection, August 26, 2011
The Joint Commission has released its 47th Sentinel Event Alert, this time targeting the risks involved with diagnostic imaging, the AHAP Blog reports.
While radiation diagnostic imaging can be used to save lives, if inappropriately used, it can have significant risks. Too frequent usage, the Sentinel Event Alert notes, can accumulate in additional health risks; insufficient use, however, can lead to misdiagnoses, delays in treatment, and more.
Health risks associated with the ionizing radiation used in diagnostic imaging include cancer, burns, and more, and x-rays have been classified as a carcinogen by multiple national and international health organizations.
