The CDC released statistics in its March issue of Vital Signs indicating that medical professionals have reduced central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) in the ICU by 58% from 2001 to 2009, saving up to 6,000 lives. The decrease also translates to $414 ­million in potential excess healthcare costs in 2009 alone, and $1.8 billion in cumulative excess healthcare costs since 2001.
