The plan for implementation
Consider performing a gap analysis of your current situation to where you would like to be as an organization. It will allow you to prioritize your efforts and identify action plans to better meet your patient-specific health literacy needs.
Expect a probable implementation date sometime in 2012 which is really just around the corner. The reality is that The Joint Commission is determining what the best criteria for compliance will be and staff is currently relying on hospitals to judge these elements based on what their data is showing in the interim. It’s in your best interest to review your process and understand where you are related to patient health literacy.
