Standard readiness: Targeting patient provider communications
Part 9 of 12
Educating the patient
Some additional questions to ask when ensuring compliance with federal requirements are:
- What happens if the patient needs assistance in understanding health care information? How does the process get implemented?
- How are individual patient needs currently identified?
- How does staff interface with these patients?
- How are the needs monitored on an ongoing basis for effectiveness?
- How are unique needs communicated among staff, between departments and on transfer out? Will you see a single notation that a patient cannot read identified by the admitting nurse with no other documentation of patient-specific accommodation in the record? (e.g. are all surgical consents written? How do simple things such as filling out the dietary menu get completed?)
