Joint Commission to release update to manual in April

The Joint Commission announced this week that its annual "Update 1" to its accreditation manuals will be released in April. This announcement effects the following programs: ambulatory care, behavioral health care, critical access hospital, home care, hospital, laboratory, long term care and office-based surgery. There are no updates expected for disease-specific care or healthcare staffing services programs.
This update will also be included in the E-dition®.
The changes will reflect the following:
- Unannounced survey time frames. This will change from 18-39 months to 18-36 months (this effects all programs except laboratories).
- The Public Information Policy has been revised for all programs.
- The term “rape” has been refined to encompass “sexual abuse/assault (including rape)” for all programs.
- For acute, psychiatric, and surgical specialty services in the hospital programs, this update will include a new Standards Applicability Grid (SAG) chapter with blue tab.
- The glossary has been updated.
