The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have issued a media advisory stating that hospitals and dialysis centers should do more to prevent central line bloodstream-associated infections (CLABSI). The CDC explores the topic in its current issue of Vital Signs.

According to the CDC’s official statement, thre was a 58% decrease in CLABSIs in 2009 compared to 2001 proves that such infections are preventable. It estimated this decrease saved some 27,000 lives and $1.8 billion in excess healthcare costs.

The CDC has issued numerous guidelines and recommendations for the prevention of CLABSIs.
