Deadline for implementing telemedicine requirements extended
Accreditation Connection, February 17, 2011
The Joint Commission announced this week that, because the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has not yet published its new telehealth regulations, an extension has been issued to The Joint Commission for updating and implementing telehealth standards. Originally, these standards changes were to be implemented by March 1, 2011.
According to The Joint Commission's announcement in its February 16 Joint Commission Online, the organization hopes that the CMS standard will fall closer in line with Joint Commission telehealth requirements.
CMS is expected to announce its changes shortly. The Joint Commission has been told that the implementation date has been extended from March 1 to July 1, 2011. After the CMS changes are announced, The Joint Commission will then tell accredited hospitals and critical access hospitals what the timeframe for implementation will be.
