Joint Commission updates sentinel event page

The Joint Commission has updated its sentinel event statistics webpage with the latest statistics as well as some significant improvements to the way the information is presented.
The organization has broken down the data so that it focuses on sentinel event statistics since 2004. It has added various reports for download on these statistics as well.
The Joint Commission has added seven new types of sentinel events to the list:
- dialysis-related event
- inpatient drug overdose
- other unanticipated event
- radiation overdose
- self-inflicted injury
- severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia
- transfer-related event
From 2004 through 2010, The Joint Commission has reviewed 4,850 voluntarily reported sentinel events from 2004-2010. For more information on this topic, visit The Joint Commission’s website.
