Joint Commission to align with CMS changes to patient visitation CoPs
Accreditation Connection, January 14, 2011
CMS has recently updated its requirements under the Conditions of Participation (CoP) for patient visitation rights for both hospitals and critical access hospitals. These changes are intended to ensure equal rights for all patients.
The Joint Commission has announced that it will update its own requirements to fall in line with this new CoP language. New and revised elements of performance (EP) will go into effect July 1, 2011. Beginning Feb. 18, 2011, deemed hospitals and critical access hospitals will be surveyed for the CoPs on these changes under RI.01.01.01 EPs 1, 2, 5, and 6, and LD.04.01.01, EP 2. Beginning July 1, all hospitals and critical access hospitals will be surveyed under these EPs and new EPs developed to comply with the CMS changes.
Note: the requirements for hospitals were originally scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1, 2012.
For extensive details on these changes, be sure to visit The Joint Commission’s website.
