Fire Evacuations in the procedural areas

Part 4 of 5

Timing evacuation drills

While there is no doubt that conducting fire drills can be a fairly disruptive endeavor in the “thick” of a surgical schedule, with some judicious planning, it is always possible to find a way to make it happen.

Practice evacuation exercises can be scheduled on slower days or times—even before the day gets rolling—definitely something to try if you are not already doing so. In some cases, facilities actually move “live” patients (staff volunteers make this a whole lot more life-like), which takes a great deal of coordination, but if there should be a real fire, the process of actually moving a patient should be as familiar to staff as the Time Out process.
