In order to comply with changes to CMS Conditions of Participation for hospitals regarding who may order respiratory services, The Joint Commission has implemented changes to its Provision of Care standards.
CMS issued a final rule change on August 16, 2010, for 42 CFR 482.56: Rehabilitation Services and 42 CFR 482.57: Respiratory Services. The rule allows a qualified, licensed practitioner who is responsible for the patient and acting within the scope of their practice to order respiratory or rehabilitation services.
