Required Life Safety surveys
The fire alarm system for the hospital has specific items that need to be tested at different intervals. NFPA 72 Fire Alarm Code has the details on what should be tested and how frequent. What surveyors will be looking for are:
- All initiating devices, such as smoke detectors, pull stations, heat detectors, etc. need to be tested once every 12 months
- All occupant notification devices, such as chimes, bells, strobes, horns, etc. need to be tested once every 12 months
- Supervisory signals such as pressure switches, operational switches, etc. need to be tested once a quarter
- Sprinkler control valve tamper switches need to be tested semi-annually, but water-flow switches need to be tested quarterly
- Interface equipment (relays and point identification devices) that control items such as magnetic locks, magnetic door hold-open devices, smoke dampers, elevator recall, etc. need to be tested once every 12 months
- You are required to test your transmission equipment that sends the alarm signal from your fire alarm panel to the fire department, each quarter.
