NPSG.01.03.01 EP 1 revised
Accreditation Connection, September 24, 2010
The Joint Commission has announced that Element of Performance (EP) 1 of National Patient Safety Goal 01.03.01 (two person verification process for blood transfusions) has been revised for the ambulatory care, critical access hospital, hospital, and office-based surgery programs.
Based on feedback from the field, the EP now states that hospitals must use a two-person verification process, or they may alternately use a one person verification process accompanied by an automated identification technology (for example, bar coding). This change came after The Joint Commission consulted healthcare and safety experts and literature to determine that automated identification technology can and does contribute to patient safety.
