The Joint Commission suspends 'automatic' sentinel event adverse decision

The Joint Commission has suspended the policy that triggers an "automatic" adverse decision if an organization fails to complete a root cause analysis in response to a sentinel event within a specific time. The Joint Commission hopes this will encourage transparency and self-reporting of adverse events.
This change—made active as of January 1, 2010 for all accreditation and certification programs—states that if an organization makes measurable and observable efforts to prevent a reoccurrence, the Joint Commission will consider these efforts before changing the accreditation status.
