Revised medical staff bylaws receive approval from Joint Commission
Accreditation Connection, March 22, 2010
The Joint Commission has approved the revised medical staff bylaws standard MS.01.01.01, according to an official statement from The Joint Commission. The new standard will go into effect on March 31, 2011 and is designed to support a healthy relationship between medical staff and the governing body at hospitals.
The approval comes after unanimous recommendations of an 18-member expert task force comprised of individuals from the American College of Physicians, American College of Surgeons, American Dental Association, American Hospital Association, along with hospital trustees and medical staff attorneys.
Standard MS.01.01.01 addresses the medical staff’s self-governance and its accountability to the governing body for the quality and safety of patient care. The standard also recognizes the need for the governing body, medical staff, and administration to work together to ultimately achieve quality and safety of care for the patients.
