National database missing disciplined healthcare workers
Accreditation Connection, February 22, 2010
After more than 20 years, the federal government will finally allow healthcare facilities to access a national database that lists those caregivers around the nation who have been disciplined or named in a malpractice action, according to the Los Angeles Times. However, after an investigation conducted by the Los Angeles Times, it was revealed thousands of caregivers are actually missing from the database.
States such as California and Indiana have not filed a report on all disciplined caregivers. In 2008 California's psychiatric technicians board lists 84 professionals, but according to the Health Resources and Services Administration, none of these professionals are listed on the national database. An additional nine states have also not submitted a completed list of registered nurses in the state.
Despite the fact that there are missing records, the information will still be available online. However, the Web site, which will be live on March 1st, will warn readers the information available to them is still incomplete.
