The Joint Commission extends its accreditation to advanced diagnostic imaging
Accreditation Connection, February 8, 2010
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has designated The Joint Commission for advanced diagnostic imaging, according to an official statement on its Web site. To qualify for Medicare reimbursement, all medical suppliers furnishing the technical component of advanced diagnostic imaging services must be accredited by a CMS-designated accrediting organization by January 1, 2012.
Part of the Medicare Improvement for Patients and Providers Act of 2008, the new rule will affect providers of MRI, CT, PET, and nuclear medicine imaging services for Medicare beneficiaries.
The standards will focus on the following attributes:
- Qualifications of medical personnel and medical directors
- Performance specifications for imaging equipment
- Quality assurance and quality control programs to ensure the safety, reliability, clarity, and accuracy of diagnostic imaging
