Thirteen CA hospitals receive fines due to medical errors

Accreditation Connection, February 1, 2010

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has fined 13 California hospitals for medical errors that could have caused serious injury or death to the patients, according to the CDPH official Web site. Those hospitals that have been fined by the CDPH are now required to submit a plan for corrective action, even if they have appealed the fines.

The hospitals that are being fined include: three hospitals in the Los Angeles County, with fines of either $25,000 or $50,000; three hospitals in the Orange County area, with fines of $50,000; and one hospital in Riverside County, with a fine of $25,000 for multiple infractions. The total fine depends on when the incident occurred. If the incident took place in 2008, the fine is $25,000. If the incident took place in 2009, the fine is $50,000, but will climb to $100,000 for the third incident and any incidents afterward.

To prevent future incidents, facilities are required to implement a plan of correction and upon request, the hospitals can appeal an administrative penalty within 10 calendar days of notification.
