Accreditation Connection, September 28, 2009

The Department of Public Health issued eleven hospitals administrative penalties of $25,000 for violations that, in some cases, could have led to death or serious injury, according to the organization’s official Web site.

Most of the hospitals are located in Southern California and half of the hospitals were cited because doctors or hospital staff members left foreign objects in patients after surgery. Two hospitals, Coast Plaza Doctors Hospital in Norwalk, CA and Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, had been previously fined for failure to follow proper surgical procedures.

The other nine hospitals that were cited include: Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, Berkeley; Kindred Hospital, Ontario, San Bernardino County; Loma Linda University Medical Center, INC, Loma Linda; Mendocino Coast District Hospital, Fort Bragg; Redwood Memorial Hospital, Fortuna; Saint John’s Hospital and Health Center, Santa Monica' Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, Chula Vista; Tri-City Hospital District, Oceanside; and USC University Hospital, Los Angeles.
