John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award Recipients announced

The 2009 John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award Recipients have been announced on the National Quality Forum (NQF) and the Joint Commission's Web site. An international category was added to the original four categories where a nominee could receive an award. The categories include the individual achievement, research, innovation in patient safety and quality at the national level, innovation in patient safety and quality at the local level, and the international category.
The patient safety awards program was launched in 2002 by NQF and the Joint Commission in honor of John M. Eisenberg who was a passionate advocate for patient safety and health care quality, and who personally led the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's grant program to support patient safety research.
The winners of each category include:
- Individual: Gary S. Kaplan, MD, Virginia Mason Medical Center
- Research: Tejal Gandhi, MD, Brigham and Women's Hospital
- Innovation in PS and Quality; National Level: Michigan Health & Hospital Association Keystone Center for Patient Safety and Quality
- Innovation in PS and Quality; Local Level: Mercy Hospital Anderson
- International: Noreen Zafar, MD, FRCOG, Lahore, Pakistan
