The report, Healthcare-Associated Infections: HHS Action Needed to Obtain Nationally Representative Data on Risks in Ambulatory Surgical Centers, examined the existing data about HAIs in ASCs, but found that they didn?t provide a complete picture. Recent high-profile HAI cases in ASCs due to lapses in infection control may indicate a more widespread problem, but the prevalence of the problem is undetermined, the report said. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and other entities collect HAI data, including process data on the use of recommended infection control practices and outcome data on HAI incidence. CMS conducts surveys on half of ASCs every three to four years, assessing compliance with its infection control standard. The GAO identified five sources of HAI data, two operated by HHS, two by professional groups, and one by a state government. But all the sources differ in the type of information they collect. The researchers found that none of the sources currently collects their data from a nationally representative sample of ASCs.
