Ohio hospitals required to report infection info

Accreditation Connection, December 24, 2008

Ohio hospitals will be required in 2009 to report infection information to consumers, despite an attempt by the Ohio Hospital Association to prevent it from happening, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer health blog.

The Hospital Measures Advisory Council, which was created by a 2006 law, recommended hospitals disclose common infections and whether healthcare facilities are vigilant about handwashing and other practices that help prevent infections. An amendment that would invalidate much of the council’s efforts was shot down by the Ohio House of Representatives and Senate recently.

Under the plan, hospitals will report data about surgical wound infections, antibiotic-resistant staph, and clostridium difficile on a consumer Web site. Reporting is expected to begin in 2009 and be available online in January 2010, the Plain Dealer blog reports.
