AZ health system rebounds to earn full accreditation

Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS) of Phoenix, which fared poorly on its Joint Commission survey last year, earned full accreditation last week, the Arizona Republic.

The system corrected all 17 documentation flaws that surveyors found last year. If MIHS had failed to correct the problems, it would have been one step closer to losing accreditation, which could have resulted in the loss of millions in federal funding, the Republic reports.

In September 2007, Joint Commission surveyors found significant documentation flaws, including incomplete records, according to the paper. MIHS received a preliminary denial of accreditation, which was upgraded to conditional accreditation after MIHS appealed.

MIHS CEO Betsey Bayless told the Republic that the system improved its quality assurance team and added nurses and other staff on every floor to monitor patient charts for proper documentation.
