Bedsores becoming a hospital epidemic

Accreditation Connection, December 11, 2008

More than a 500,000 patients admitted to U.S. hospitals in 2006 developed a bedsore during their stay, the New York Times reports.

This marks an increase of 79% from 1993, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Hospital admissions increased just 15% in the same timeframe.

The American Hospital Association speculates that the rise in numbers of bedsores may be the result of more elderly, immobile patients at hospitals, as well as a more accurate accounting of bedsores due to more attention to the issue.
