PSOs to take on analytic role at the state level, experts say

Accreditation Connection, December 11, 2008

Patient safety organizations (PSO) now have standards for certification, giving them the opportunity to act in an analytical role that has not existed previously outside the state level, AMNews reports.

The final rule for the Patient Safety and Quality and Improvement Act of 2005 was released in November and will go into effect January 19, 2009. The act covers all patient safety deliberations, analyses, and peer reviews reported to PSOs, allowing for the gathering and pooling of confidential databases for analysis. The rule prevents this information from being opened through legal discovery.

Thus far, 20 PSOs have been certified nationwide.
