FDA seizes contaminated heparin

Accreditation Connection, November 7, 2008

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seized 11 lots of contaminated heparin from a Cincinnati, OH, laboratory this month.

US Marshalls seized two types of heparin from Celsus Laboratories, Inc., after discovering the products had been contaminated with over-sulfated chondroitin sulfate, a substance that mimics heparin’s anticoagulant activity.
