CMS to improve quality of care for hospital outpatient departments
Accreditation Connection, October 31, 2008
CMS announced intentions to build upon the connection between the quality of care provided to Medicare patients in hospital outpatient departments and the hospitals providing that care.
In a final rule announced October 30, CMS emphasized an urgent and compelling rationale to develop and implement a policy in which hospitals would not be paid for care related to illnesses or injuries acquired during a hospital encounter. CMS plans to issue a policy to address payment for these conditions in the outpatient setting.
