Study: Unique patient identifiers would benefit healthcare

According to a study by the Rand Corporation, the creation of unique patient identifiers that would accurately link, file, and retrieve patient health records would be expensive to implement but provide even greater value on the national healthcare scene.
The study found that creating unique patient identifiers for every patient in the country would cost in the vicinity of $11 billion. The benefits, however, would include increased patient safety, fewer medical errors, and additional patient privacy.
