MRSA hits home

Roughly 15% of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) cases are not linked to hospitalization, and are often mistaken at first blush as spider bites or other more common ailments, the Wall Street Journal’s healthcare blog reports.

Despite only approximately 1% of the population currently carrying MRSA, some 18,650 people died from the infection in 2005 and another 94,000 fell seriously ill, the blog states.
