Pediatricians slow to admit errors
Accreditation Connection, October 10, 2008
A recent study shows that only half of U.S. pediatricians surveyed would admit a medical error to the family of a child patient, HealthDay News reports.
The survey, which involved roughly 200 physicians in either St. Louis or Seattle, found that 53% of respondents would disclose errors, and 58% would admit the details of an error. Twice as many physicians said they would disclose an error if the mistake were one that would be obvious to the patient’s family.
Researchers pointed to fear of malpractice suits, as well as basic human reactions of shame and embarrassment, as reasons behind the respondents’ reluctance to admit errors.
