GAO report reviews hospital MRSA-reduction initiatives
Accreditation Connection, October 3, 2008
Due to the recent concerns about healthcare associated infections (HAI), the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) was asked to report on state hospitals with Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-reduction initiatives. The results are available on the GAO Web site.
The GAO reported that through February 2008, 23 states had established mandatory HAI public reporting systems. Many of these hospitals had implemented the same approach to designing their programs. The GAO furthered its study by reviewing 14 of the hospitals and their MRSA-reduction initiations and discovered that these hospitals made changes to their infection control policies.
GAO also received comments from the Department of Health and Human Services and the American Hospital Association.
