Accreditation Connection, September 19, 2008

As hospitals battle drug resistant infections like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, another “superbug” is trending upward: Clostridium difficile, the Wall Street Journal reports.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are roughly 500,000 cases of C. diff in the US each year, with related deaths ranging from 15,000 to 30,000. The number of cases stood at just 150,000 in 2001.
